The Gut
Your gut is the whole organ system running from your mouth all the way to your rectum, and it does way more than break down lunch. It has its own network of nerves, so tightly wired it's often called your "second brain" (officially, the enteric nervous system). It's also widely described as home to a majority of your immune system, though scientists are still pinning down the exact number. And it hosts the gut microbiome: trillions of bacteria and other microbes we'll get into below. All together, your gut handles digestion, immune support, absorbing and discarding nutrients, and even producing chemical messengers that affect your mood. Not too shabby for something most people never think about.
The Gut Microbiome
The gut microbiome is the trillions of microorganisms living in your digestive tract, mostly in your intestines. Yes, trillions, you are carrying around an entire ecosystem.

Most of them are bacteria, but there are also viruses, fungi, and other microbes in the mix.

A healthy microbiome is all about balance: lots of beneficial microbes keeping a smaller number of potentially harmful ones in check. The good guys help with digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function. Even the "bad" ones, in small amounts, play a role, by keeping your immune system alert and maintain healthy competition.

The Digestion Process
Digestion is a three-part process where your body breaks food down into usable nutrients for energy, growth, and repair.

The cephalic phase kicks off before food even reaches your mouth. When you see, smell, or even just think about food, your brain signals your digestive system to get ready — your mouth waters and your stomach starts releasing digestive juices. (That's why a good smell makes your stomach growl.)

The gastric phase happens in your stomach. Food gets mixed with stomach acid and enzymes, then churned by stomach muscles into a semi-liquid goop called chyme. Appetizing, we know.

The intestinal phase is where the magic finishes. Chyme moves into the small intestine, where juices from the pancreas and bile from the liver and gallbladder break carbs into simple sugars, proteins into amino acids, and fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Those nutrients then get absorbed through the small intestine into your bloodstream and shipped out to the rest of your body. This is the moment all that food finally becomes you.
QUICK MYTH-BUST
You've probably heard that eating smaller, more frequent meals is "better" for digestion or metabolism. Truth is, it varies person to person. Some people feel great grazing on smaller meals; others do better with bigger, less frequent ones. There's no universal right answer. What actually matters is your overall nutrition, balanced meals, and listening to your own hunger and fullness cues.

If you were paying attention, you might remember fiber from the carbohydrate section. If not, let's focus up. Anyways, here is its time to shine.
Fiber is a carb your body can't fully digest, so instead of breaking down into glucose, it travels through your system largely intact: and that's exactly the point. Along the way it slows food down for steadier digestion and energy, feeds the beneficial bacteria in your large intestine, and keeps things, well, moving. Fiber isn't a direct energy source like other carbs, but it's essential for smooth digestion and long-term gut health. Find it in berries, leafy greens, broccoli, oats, beans, lentils, almonds, and chia seeds.
