General Misconceptions & Trends
Nutrition misinformation spreads fast online, and a lot of it is oversimplified, flat-out wrong, or secretly trying to sell you something. Let’s bust some of the biggest myths.
The Protein Craze
Protein has somehow become the internet’s favorite macronutrient, with “protein-added” versions of everything from ice cream to water to popcorn crowding the shelves. Here’s the reality: most people (especially in the U.S.) already get plenty of protein from a normal, varied diet. Unless you’re a serious athlete, a bodybuilder, or have a specific medical need, you probably don’t need to “chase” protein or buy protein-boosted everything. And protein isn’t more important than carbs or fats, all three matter. Obsessing over one macro usually just means you’re shortchanging the others.
“Carbs Are Bad”
Carbs are your body and brain’s number-one energy source. Cutting them out entirely isn’t necessary for most people and can leave you drained and low on fiber. The real issue was never carbs as a category, it’s the balance between complex carbs (whole grains, beans, fruit) and simple carbs (candy, soda, white bread). Don’t ditch carbs; upgrade them.
“Low-Fat Means Healthier”
For years, “low-fat” and “fat-free” were slapped on everything as a health badge, and the idea stuck. But here’s the catch: when companies pull the fat out of a product, they often pump sugar back in to make up for the lost flavor and texture. So a “low-fat” yogurt or snack can actually carry more added sugar than the regular version. On top of that, healthy fats (remember the unsaturated all-stars?) are genuinely good for you and help you feel full. “Low-fat” isn’t automatically better, flip the package over and check the added sugar before you assume it’s the healthier pick.
“Dietary Cholesterol Wrecks Your Blood Cholesterol”
This one’s a classic, and it’s why eggs got an undeserved bad reputation for decades. The old belief was that eating cholesterol (in eggs, shrimp, etc.) directly spikes your blood cholesterol. But research has shifted: for most people, the saturated and trans fats you eat raise blood cholesterol far more than dietary cholesterol itself does. That’s why the U.S. Dietary Guidelines dropped their strict daily cholesterol limit. Eggs can absolutely be part of a healthy diet. (A caveat: this isn’t a free pass for everyone, some people are more sensitive to dietary cholesterol, and anyone with a specific health condition should follow their doctor’s guidance.)
Fad Diets

Diets that promise fast results by cutting out entire food groups (keto, extreme low-carb, “detox” cleanses, and so on) are often unsustainable, unnecessary, and sometimes harmful, especially for teens, whose bodies are still growing and developing.

Red flag rule: if a diet promises a specific number on the scale by a specific date, or sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Boring but true: sustainable habits, balance, variety, moderation, beat restrictive fad diets for long-term health basically every single time.

“Organic Is Automatically Healthier”
Here’s the myth in a sentence: “organic” tells you how a food was grown, not how nutritious it is. There isn’t strong evidence that organic food is meaningfully more nutritious than conventionally grown food, and it usually costs more. So for most people’s health, access and affordability matter way more than an organic label, eating conventional produce beats eating no produce, every single time. “Clean Eating” and Food Guilt
Labeling foods “clean” or “dirty,” “good” or “bad” sounds healthy but often backfires, it can breed guilt and an unhealthy relationship with food. No single food or meal makes or breaks your health. What actually matters is your overall pattern over weeks and months, not any one cookie.
Are “Health” Foods Actually Healthy?
Some of the biggest wins in food marketing come from products that sound healthy. Let’s put a few popular ones under the microscope, the honest answer is usually “it depends.”

Artificial sweeteners (Splenda, stevia, aspartame, etc.): These deliver sweetness with few or no calories and don’t spike blood sugar like regular sugar, so for someone cutting back on added sugar, they can be a useful swap. That said, research on heavy, long-term use is still developing, and they can keep your craving for super-sweet things alive. Moderation still wins, “zero sugar” doesn’t automatically mean “health food.”

Diet soda: A real improvement over regular soda in the added-sugar department, but it’s still not doing much for you nutritionally, and it’s no replacement for water. Fine as an occasional swap; not a daily hydration plan.

Protein bars: Some are a genuinely solid, convenient snack. Others are basically candy bars in gym clothes, loaded with added sugar and a mile-long ingredient list. The label tells the real story: check the added sugar and ingredients, not just the giant “20g PROTEIN!” on the front.

“Health” buzz-labels (all-natural, superfood, detox, immunity-boosting): Most of these are marketing terms with little or no regulation behind them. A granola labeled “natural” can still be loaded with sugar, and a “detox” tea doesn’t detox anything (your liver and kidneys already handle that, for free).
The pattern? The front of the package is an ad; the back (ingredients and nutrition facts) is the truth. A food isn’t healthy because it says so, it’s healthy based on what’s actually inside.
Different Kinds of Diets
Chances are you’ve heard people talk about “going keto” or “doing the Mediterranean diet.” Here, “diet” just means a pattern of eating, not necessarily a weight-loss plan. Some are backed by strong science and built for long-term health; others are trendier, more restrictive, and can be genuinely risky, especially for teens, whose growing bodies need steady, complete nutrition. Here’s an honest, no-shame rundown of the big ones.
One quick note before we dive in: if you’re a teenager, this really isn’t the season for restrictive dieting. Your body is busy building bone, muscle, and brain, and cutting out whole food groups can backfire hard. Treat this list as information, not a to-do list, and always loop in a doctor before making a big change to how you eat.
The Generally Well-Regarded Ones

Mediterranean diet — Based on how people traditionally eat around the Mediterranean: loads of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, olive oil, and fish, with less red meat and few ultra-processed foods. It consistently ranks among the healthiest, most sustainable eating patterns out there, and it’s not about restriction, just balance. A great model for almost anyone.

DASH diet — Short for “Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.” Designed to lower blood pressure, it leans on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy while limiting sodium, added sugar, and saturated fat. Well-studied, balanced, and doctor-approved for heart health.

MIND diet — A mashup of the Mediterranean and DASH diets, specifically designed to support brain health and possibly slow cognitive decline as people age. It highlights leafy greens, berries, nuts, and whole grains. Also balanced and non-extreme.

Vegetarian / Vegan diets — Vegetarian means no meat; vegan means no animal products at all (no meat, dairy, eggs, or honey). Both can be very healthy and gentler on the planet, but they take a little planning to cover certain nutrients, especially vitamin B12, iron, calcium, and protein variety. Vegans in particular usually need a B12 supplement, since it comes almost entirely from animal foods. Done thoughtfully, these work at any age.
The More Restrictive / Trendier Ones (Extra Caution for Teens)

Keto (ketogenic) diet — Very low carb, very high fat. The goal is to push your body into “ketosis,” burning fat for fuel instead of carbs. It has legitimate medical uses (like managing certain types of epilepsy), but as a casual diet it’s extremely restrictive, cuts out whole food groups (including fruit and most grains), and isn’t recommended for growing teens who need carbs for energy and brain function.

Atkins diet — An older low-carb diet, similar in spirit to keto, that limits carbs while allowing plenty of protein and fat. Same concerns: cutting carbs that hard is tough to sustain and not ideal for active, growing bodies.

Paleo diet — Built around eating like our “caveman” ancestors supposedly did: meat, fish, veggies, fruit, nuts, and seeds, while cutting grains, legumes (beans), and dairy. It gets some things right (more whole foods, less processed junk), but the history behind it is oversimplified, and cutting beans, grains, and dairy removes cheap, nutritious staples, including major calcium sources teens need.

Intermittent fasting — Not about what you eat but when: cycling between eating windows and fasting periods (like only eating within an 8-hour window). Some adults find it helpful, but for teens it’s generally not recommended. Skipping meals during your growth years can hurt your energy, focus, and relationship with food, and it can slide into disordered eating.
If you want a model to actually follow, the Mediterranean, DASH, and MIND diets are the gold standard, balanced, flexible, and built for the long haul instead of a quick fix. The low-carb and restrictive ones (keto, Atkins, paleo, intermittent fasting) have specific uses for specific adults, but they’re generally not a good fit for growing teens and are hard to keep up. Honestly? The best “diet” for most people isn’t a named plan at all, it’s the balanced, varied, no-food-group-left-behind approach this whole page is about.
What’s Actually Trending Right Now

Not every trend is nonsense, some reflect where the real science is heading. Here are a few worth knowing about:

The microbiome moment. Gut health has gone mainstream, and for good reason. Researchers are learning more and more about how prebiotic fibers (the food your good gut bacteria love) and probiotics (the beneficial bacteria themselves, in foods like yogurt and kimchi) support your microbiome and your overall wellness. Protein optimization. Interest in protein for muscle and fullness is still sky-high. The useful part: protein is important and satisfying. The overblown part: most people already get plenty from normal meals, and the rush to supplement often overshoots what your body actually needs. (See “The Protein Craze” above.)

Here’s a trend we love: instead of cutting out entire food groups, more people are focusing on the overall quality of their food, how nutrient-rich and how processed it is, rather than obsessing over what to eliminate. That’s basically this whole page in a nutshell.
Other Confusing Terms
A few terms are commonly used to make certain foods sound better or worse than they are. We'll define these terms clearly, so you understand exactly what companies mean when they highlight them.
Calories — A calorie is a unit of energy: the energy in food/drink, or the energy your body uses for basic function and activity. "High-calorie" or "low-calorie" describes energy density, not whether a food is good or bad: that depends on your overall diet and needs.
Sugar — A type of carbohydrate that provides quick energy. It occurs naturally in foods like fruit (fructose) and milk (lactose), and is also added during processing (added sugar). Sugar itself isn't inherently harmful; impact depends on amount, form, and what it's paired with (fiber, protein, fat).
Antioxidants — Compounds that help neutralize free radicals, which can damage cells over time. Naturally present in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. Useful, but their presence in a food doesn't automatically make that food "healthy" overall.
Natural — A loosely regulated term (not formally defined by the FDA for most products) generally implying no artificial ingredients. Doesn't inherently mean more nutritious or lower in sugar/fat/calories.
Organic — Describes how a food was grown or raised (without most synthetic pesticides, GMOs, routine antibiotics, etc.), per certification standards. It's a production method, not a nutrition claim — an organic cookie is still a cookie.
Superfood — Not a scientific or regulated term; a marketing label for foods notably rich in nutrients. Can be nutrient-dense, but no single food provides complete nutrition alone.
Whole food — A food minimally altered from its natural state (an apple vs. apple juice). Describes how intact a food is, not a guarantee of health benefit.
Sodium — A mineral needed in small amounts for fluid balance and nerve function. Naturally present in many foods and also added as salt. "High/low-sodium" describes quantity, not a verdict on overall nutritional value.
Empty calories — Describes foods that provide energy but few other nutrients (vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber). A description of nutrient density, not a blanket judgment.
Gluten — A protein in wheat, barley, and rye. Normal part of most diets; relevant mainly for people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. "Gluten-free" isn't inherently "healthier" for the general population.
GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) — A crop or ingredient whose genetic material has been altered through biotechnology, often to improve traits like pest resistance, yield, or drought tolerance. It describes a production method, not a nutritional profile — a GMO food isn't inherently more or less nutritious than its non-GMO counterpart.
Additives / Preservatives — Ingredients added to food to maintain freshness, texture, flavor, color, or safety. They range from naturally derived (like vitamin C used to prevent browning) to synthetic. Presence of an additive doesn't by itself indicate a food is unhealthy — it depends on the specific ingredient and amount.
Fortified / Enriched — Terms describing foods that have had nutrients added. "Fortified" means nutrients not originally in the food were added (like vitamin D in milk); "enriched" typically means nutrients lost during processing were added back (like B vitamins in refined flour). Both describe a nutrient-addition process, not an automatic health upgrade.
